Healthy Hands & Hygiene
began in 2013, at Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences where Tawanda Williams, Program Director was employed as the School Nurse. For three successful years of her employment, she was able to teach The Handwashing Initiative to grades K-2, give hygiene education to students sent to the nursing office for various complaints related to hygiene; in addition to teaching teacher's important techniques such as seizure precautions, signs and symptoms of hypo/hyperglycemia for diabetic students, information and interventions for behavioral diagnoses, and timed voiding techniques for students with toileting problems. Tawanda has been a Registered Nurse for 12 years, with experience as a school nurse for 3 years and an adolescent behavioral nurse at an inpatient facility for 2 years.
